Sugar-free me? Will I Survive?

Last year I set myself a few challenges, one of which was to go without chocolate for a whole month. This was a big ask for this chocoholic, but I'm pleased to say I made it.  I did this challenge just before Christmas last year and felt slightly cleansed before I entered the Festive Season.

This year I was planning on doing the same thing - no chocolate for a month.

I decided that I could do better though. So I have waved the red flag at my inner bull and set my new challenge.

I have decided to do a 30 day Sugar-free challenge.
There was a bit of hype in the blogging world last year of people choosing to cut sugar from their diets, and it has been in the back of my mind since.

So I have started by eliminating the usual sugars and sweeteners, and have decided to follow Dr Scott Olson's plan which also eliminates foods that act like sugar, which, in it's simplest explanation, is grains, carbs, and any fruit and veg which is not within the low GI or no GI category. You can check out the website Dr Olson has set up here, or on the Facebook page .

4 days in and I am feeling pretty good.

Have you ever tried sugar-free? How did you/do you think you would go?

  1. I've been doing Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar program for the past few months. Sometimes I fall off the wagon (especially on the weekends) but I'm surprised at how much better I feel when I am sugar free. I really feel like I've found something I can stick with for good, not a diet that I'll eventually give up on. I hope you have a similar result! :)

  2. Power to you! I have a hefty sweet tooth and just the idea of this alone makes me shudder. Good luck!

  3. I also enjoy cutting sugar from my diet. I follow the I Quit Sugar Approach by Sarah Wilson. I find it easier to maintain because its not too extreme.

  4. Well done you for giving it a go. The whole no chocolate for a month I could probably do but I don't know about the whole no sugar thing. Having said that though I am off to investigate it further!

    1. My husband informed my he just got some blocks of chocolate for a bargain ... but he's hiding them in the back of the cupboard for me. I wish he hadn't told me at all!

  5. I have been sugar free for a month now doing a paleo eating plan - no dairy, no wheat, no sugar, no soft drinks - pretty much water, fruit, veg and protein. I have to be honest and say that I feel so much better eating like this. My energy levels are so much higher. We have had some 70% and 85% chocolate and I don't know if I could go back to eating 'normal' chocolate again - I think it will be too sweet. We tried to have a soft drink after completing Warrior Dash a couple of weekends ago - each had a mouthful and threw it away - it tasted revolting (I would probably drink 2-3l of Pepsi Max a day before this).
I always said I would never be able to do it but it hasn't been nearly as hard as I thought. I would think that maybe Christmas would be a challenge this year but I am not going to beat myself up if I have a little - I will probably just feel like cr*p because my body doesn't know how to process it anymore.
Good luck - I am sure you won't regret the decision.
    Have a great day !

  8. Go you! Also have a look at www.marksdailyapple.com as what you mention is basically a primal diet and he has some excellent recipes and resources there. Good luck :)

  10. I love bread too much to do it. And pasta. I have so much admiration for people who can do it, but I'm not one of them

  11. Good luck. I don't think I could manage to do that.

  12. I'm too weak to even contemplate that - but I think I should do it. I did Dry July this year and it near killed me! I did raise $400 for those living with cancer though. All the best!
