Tasmanian Snowfall

Snow was predicted and snow was received across Tasmania today. The hype was building, the cynics were voicing their doubt, and the child in us all was hoping it was true. Unless you were awake through the night and periodically checking for snow like a child watching for Santa, then you awoke a dusting or a dumping of snow across most areas of Tasmania.

Whilst it is not uncommon for parts of Tasmania to receive snow, it is extremely rare for so much of the state to have snow, and it was received down to sea level. If, somehow, you were oblivious to the outside world, it was soon in your face from every social media direction. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and many other mediums were full of pictures and stories of snow across the state. Children and parents waited anxiously for news of school closures, and those who needed to venture out were checking for road closure announcements.

I was in primary school in the 80's when I experienced snow in my own backyard, which resulted in a snow day being called due to frozen pipes, and a huge snow fight in my cul-de-sac. My children see snow every year, as we usually make the journey to a snow blessed, elevated location at least once annually to have a play. To have snow falling around our house and to be able to scoop it off our own letterbox if quite a different experience.

So as not to bore you with too much detail, how about I just show you in pictures.

Wordless Wednesday - Not Too Cold To Paddle in Tasmanian Waters

Poor Tasmania suffers a lot of backlash in regard to it's weather. Many would describe Tasmanian weather as cold and wet, and whilst this can be sometimes true, the weather here is often great, and it's seasons and predictability is changing. My son wasted no time in making the most of the water when Southern Tasmanian served up great weather for Easter. He wasn't the only one paddling around in the water either.

What is that light over yonder?

With the start of Daylight Savings today in Tasmania, I am literally doing a little happy dance.

There is no better feeling that walking out of work at 5pm, seeing the sun still high in the sky, and knowing that you still have daylight to enjoy.

We try to make the most of the extra daylight hours and better weather where we can, and I will be sure to share some of this with you while it lasts.

We love to use this time as a family, to enjoy the outdoors. We also get together regularly with friends through the week for a BBQ, either at our homes or our fantastic local park. Those extra hours give us a great reason to get outside and do those jobs around the garden and exercise. Television shows usually take a backseat for our family during this period of extra daylight, but considering our regular favourites usually take a break over this time, it is certainly no loss.

I certainly know where I would rather be .... and it's not sitting in front of the box.

Do you have daylight savings where you live? Do you love it or hate it?

A Wintery Walk

Today started out sunny, but the cold front is now here and the weather has turned wild and blustery.

Which is why I am so glad that we got out yesterday, to do something together, away from the house.

We structured our day so that we could get a few things done around the house, and then head out to enjoy the rest of the day.

The kids love taking the dog for a walk. They don't like to walk along a track though - they prefer to walk around the streets and shops. So we grabbed the dog on her lead, some drinks and a snack, and off we went.

Master 4 decided that he wanted to ride his bike, while Miss 7 and I were happy to walk with the dog.

While there was a slight chill in the air, and a few drops of rain, we enjoyed our walk around our great little town. We window-shopped, and sat in a lovely little gazebo, we took a break on some swings and the dog was happy when some boys left some hot chips and gravy behind.

It was pleasant and care-free with no agenda. Such an enjoyable afternoon together.
